Why do you probe and probe his mind,
your queries a craniotomy?
What is it you expect to find,
some error of physiognomy?

His mind is well beyond your sight –
a puzzle sans solution.
Pure physics can't explain his plight,
nor give pain resolution.

So go ahead, prescribe your pills –
Perhaps we will note change this time.
And should his sorrows rack him still,
prescribe some more – just give it time.

But at some point you'll come to ask
'Is there aught wrong, that I can find?'
That's when you'll take his pain to task:
'There is no pain. It's just your mind.'
I'm not sure about the title - I will probably change it in the future.

Is it not ironic that I'm criticising what I hope to be my future profession?

('take to task' -> berate, admonish
craniotomy -> The surgical procedure for removing a part of the skull to gain access to the brain)

I really like the rhythm and rhyme scheme. Not to mention there was some fascinating imagery you bring up. In fact, this makes the imagination run a bit wild. (Can't seem to help but think of imagery from Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and cartoon parodies of the psychiatry profession.) It'd be intriguing to try to illustrate.

Hmm... I can't help but feel in favor of academia when it comes to science and, more specifically, medicine. Here-say from laymen (even the layman patient) about ineffectiveness makes me feel they are impatient (and a bit ignorant...) Credentials are kind of important.

I've got a loved one that is constantly saying 'it doesn't work' to all the medication prescribed for his condition. He's constantly shuffled different medications- not really giving them the chance (it would seem.) I don't think he understands the chemistry and biology involved in how they work. I imagine it should take months to see- after all its trying to create a functional chemical environ in the brain (it's not magic... nor a panacea.)

Bleh, sorry for the rant. This is all speaking from a person deeply fascinated by the sciences and plans to go for toxicology. I do also have an interest in how the brain ticks.
